Where is Taylor Swift’s ex Joe Alwyn – and what does he think of TTPD? He’s starring in a film with Emma Stone, attended a Loewe show with Zayn Malik, and hangs with Andrew Garfield and Dua Lipa

It’s hard to fathom how Taylor Swift, a newly minted billionaire and America’s musical sweetheart, has managed to record an entire album – with 31 tracks, no less – all while keeping busy with her record-breaking world tour, love life with Travis Kelce, and attending events in support of her long-time friends.

But when inspiration calls, Swift answers. Thankfully.

Released on April 19 to much fanfare, The Tortured Poets Department is Swift’s first collection of new songs since October 2022’s Midnights. Ahead of its launch, Swifties were already speculating that the album would likely be centred around her break-up with British actor Joe Alwyn, who she dated for six years. It’s believed they split up in early 2023.

Songs like “So Long, London” seem to hint at her former relationship with Alwyn, as they spent a lot of time in the big smoke, while the album title itself is rumoured to be a potential reference to her ex, who once shared in an interview with Variety that he has a WhatsApp chat called “The Tortured Man Club” with actors Andrew Scott and Phoebe Bridgers’ ex Paul Mescal.

Although Swift has a strict policy to never reveal the identity of the people she writes songs about, Swifties are on it when it comes to deciphering her lyrics – and sharing their theories with fellow fans.

Let’s take a look at what Alwyn has been up to lately.

The London native, 33, has been busy with new films and TV shows in recent months. Upcoming productions include The Brutalist, Hamlet and Brideshead Revisited, as seen on his IMDB.

His biggest project of the year appears to be Yorgos Lanthimos’ upcoming comedy drama Kinds of Kindness, which is set for release in June, per People. The film stars two of Swift’s good friends, Emma Stone and Margaret Qualley, both of whom he’s worked with before, as well as Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe and Hunter Schafer.

He’s active on Instagram

Alwyn doesn’t seem like much of a social media guy, but he did post his first ‘gram of the year in February, showing snippets of his life and photography, including a meme of David Brent, played by Ricky Gervais, in his hit TV show The Office.

He’s been attending events

He may not get even a fraction of the attention Swift gets wherever she goes, but Alwyn does get invites to a number of A-list events, from fashion shows to galas. In January, he was spotted at the Loewe show at Paris Fashion Week sitting front row with Gigi Hadid’s ex Zayn Malik. He was later seen with Andrew Garfield, too.

He’s also been seen going to events hosted by British Vogue and Tiffany, mingling with Dua Lipa and Callum Turner.

What about his love life?

We all know that Swift is now dating NFL Kansas City Chiefs superstar Travis Kelce (you couldn’t avoid the news even if you tried), but what about Alwyn?

According to J-14, he hasn’t gone public with any relationship news – though that’s no surprise either, considering how private he is, so he could just be single. However, there are rumours circling that he’s seeing his The Brutalist co-star Emma Laird.

Although Swift and Alwyn never publicly confirmed how they met, it’s rumoured that they first crossed paths at the Met Gala in 2016, per Elle. In Swift’s 2017 song “Dress”, her lyrics state: “Flashback to when you met me, your buzzed cut and my hair bleached.” Swift’s hair was bleached at the time when she attended the event.

What does Joe Alwyn think of Taylor Swift’s new album?

It’s unclear how Alwyn feels about the new album, but according to one source who spoke to British media, he “has not said one word about Taylor or their break-up and has been completely respectful of her”.

The source continues, “If it is a diss album, that is shady. He helped her with songwriting on her past album [under pseudonym William Bowery on Folklore and Evermore], so it will really come as a shock to him if she talks about their break-up, as it is something he has not spoken of at all. Regardless of what she does, he will still not respond because he has removed himself from her narrative and is very glad he did.”
