Accident marks third service interruption for railway operator in a week
A passenger fell onto the railway tracks at Kowloon Tong station on Friday afternoon, prompting the MTR to stop service on the line for almost half an hour.
Medics arrived immediately to rescue the trapped commuter along the East Rail Line. A report from police said the accident happened around 1.40pm, and trains travelling from Mong Kok East to Tai Wai were temporarily suspended.
MTR employees arranged for transit buses to divert stranded passengers, and service on the line resumed at around 2.05 pm. The MTR could not be reached for further comment at press time.
The incident was the third in a string of service interruptions for the railway operator this week.
On Monday, trains on the Tseung Kwan O Line were halted for five hours because of failure of an overhead power cable, causing chaos at Yau Tong and Kwun Tong stations, as commuters expressed anger at the lack of contingency plans.
The MTR is still investigating the cause of the power failure.
Within 25 hours, a light-rail train caught fire during rush hour in Tin Shui Wai on Tuesday, prompting the evacuation of around 160 passengers.
